2009 Guide for Admission of Overseas Students
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) founded in 1956, is one of the earliest established institutions of higher learning of TCM in China, and it is the only one that is incorporated into the “211 Project” among the universities and colleges of TCM, with a key role in higher education directly under the supervision of the Education Ministry of China.
BUCM has the east and west campuses. The teaching organizations include School of Pre-clinical Medicine, School of Chinese Materia Medica, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion & Tuina, Administration School, School of Chinese Nursing, International School, Schools of Clinical Medicine(including the first, second and third school),School of Distance Education, School of Extension Studies, Faculty of Humanities & Social Science, Department of Postgraduate Studies, TCM Department for Students from Taiwan, Hongkong and Macao, Higher Vocational Education Department, Physical Education Department. The university offers 9 undergraduate programs, 16 master degree programs and 15 doctoral degree programs and sets up 3 postdoctoral research stations.
According to the statistics of April 2008, there are 10,581 registered full-time students in total, among whom 6,614 are undergraduates (Chinese students 4,956;
International students have been trained in the university from 1957. In 2009, 1,414 foreign students study in the university, among them 1,055 are undergraduates, 213 are master or doctoral degree students and 146 are general or senior scholars (50 students are taking Chinese language training program). BUCM boasts a strong and qualified teaching faculty. 1. Chinese Language Teaching Programs
① Chinese Medicine (undergraduate 5 years)
Training Objectives: Training advanced clinical doctors of Chinese medicine with professional knowledge and skills to do clinical work with high efficiency guided by thoughts of Chinese medical diagnosis and treatment.
Main Courses: Basic Theory of TCM, Traditional Chinese Diagnostics, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Medical Formulae, Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Huangdi’s Canon of Internal Medicine, Treatise on Febrile Diseases, Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber, Febrile Diseases, Basic Western Diagnosis, Chinese Internal Medicine, Chinese Gynecology, Chinese Pediatrics, Chinese Surgery, Theory of TCM Emergency, and clinical practice, etc.
Qualifications of Admission: Senior high school diploma or above level; a good command of Chinese in listening, speaking, reading and writing; healthy.
② Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina (undergraduate 5 years)
Training Objectives: Training advanced acupuncturists with professional knowledge and skills to do clinical acupuncture work with high efficiency.
Main Courses: Basic Theory of TCM, Traditional Chinese Diagnostics, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Medical Formulae, Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Basic Western Diagnosis, Theory of Meridians and Acupoints, Techniques of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Acupuncture Therapeutics, Experimental Acupuncture, Selection of Acupuncture Classics, Massage and Tuina, Chinese Internal Medicine, Orthopedics of TCM, Chinese Gynecology, and clinical practice, etc.
Qualifications of Admission: Senior high school diploma or above level; a good command of Chinese in listening, speaking, reading and writing; healthy.
③ Chinese Medicine for Western Medical Doctors (undergraduate 2 years)
Training Objectives: Focusing on candidates with university diploma or above level of medicine to add to main courses and clinical practice of Chinese medicine, with the purpose of training advanced clinical doctors of Chinese medicine to conduct clinical work with professional knowledge and skills.
Main Courses: Basic Theory of TCM, Traditional Chinese Diagnostics, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Medical Formulae, Huangdi’s Canon of Internal Medicine, Treatise on Febrile Diseases, Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber, Febrile Diseases, Chinese Internal Medicine, Chinese Gynecology, Chinese Pediatrics, Chinese Surgery, Theory of TCM Emergency, Acupuncture & Moxibustion, and clinical practice, etc.
Qualifications of Admission: University diploma or above level of medicine; a good command of Chinese in listening, speaking, reading and writing; healthy.
④ Chinese Medicine (undergraduate 3 years)
Training Objectives: Focusing on candidates with tertiary vocational level of Chinese Medicine or Acupuncture to add to extensive courses and clinical practice of Chinese medicine, with the purpose of training advanced doctors of Chinese medicine to do clinical work with high efficiency.
Main Courses: Huangdi’s Canon of Internal Medicine, Treatise on Febrile Diseases, Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber, Febrile Diseases, Elite Experience of Famous Chinese Doctors, Study of TCM Case History Recording, Chinese Medical Psychology, Chinese Medical Health Science, Chinese Internal Medicine, Chinese Gynecology, Chinese Pediatrics, Chinese Health Preservation, and clinical practice, etc.
Qualifications of Admission: Tertiary vocational or above level of Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture or other related majors; a good command of Chinese in listening, speaking, reading and writing; healthy.
⑤ Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina (undergraduate 3 years)
Training Objectives: Focusing on candidates with tertiary vocational level of Chinese Medicine or Acupuncture to add to extensive courses and clinical practice of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, with the purpose of training advanced acupuncturists to do clinical work with high efficiency.
Main Courses: Basic Theory of TCM, Traditional Chinese Diagnostics, Elite Experience of Famous Acupuncturists, Study of Pain Syndromes, Acupuncture Therapeutics, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Medical Formulae, Chinese Internal Medicine, Chinese Gynecology, Tuina, Orthopedics of TCM, Chinese Health Preservation, and clinical practice, etc.

⑥ Chinese Materia Medica ( tertiary vocational 3 years)
Training Objectives: Training advanced professionals of Chinese Materia Medica with essential knowledge and skills to engage in Chinese herb processing and marketing and management of Chinese pharmacy.
Main Courses: Basic Theory of TCM, Brief History of Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Medical Formula, Chinese Herb Processing Science, Chinese Herb Pharmaceutics, Chinese Herb Identification, Analyzing Techniques of Chinese Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Botany, Medical Latin, Chinese Pharmacology, Chinese Herbal Chemistry, Chinese Prepared Medicine Science, Chinese Medicine Commercial Science, Chinese Medicine Marketing Science, Chinese Medicine Management Science, and clinical practice, etc.
Qualifications of Admission: Senior high school diploma or above level; a good command of Chinese in listening, speaking, reading and writing; healthy.
⑦ Preparatory Undergraduate Training (one year/half a year)
Training Objectives: Training qualified professionals of Chinese Language in listening, speaking, reading and writing, laying a solid foundation for further undergraduate education of Chinese Medicine.
Main Courses: Intermediate Chinese, Listening Chinese of TCM, Spoken Chinese of TCM, Modern Chinese, Ancient Chinese, Basic Theory of TCM, History of TCM, Biology, Chemistry, Traditional Physical Education, etc.
Qualifications of Admission: Senior high school diploma or above level; a certain command of Chinese in listening, speaking, reading and writing; healthy.
2. English Language Teaching Programs

III. Fees
1. Tuition Fee: Chinese Language Teaching Programs:35,000 RMB/year
English Language Teaching Programs:45,000 RMB/year
Preparatory Undergraduate Programs:28,000 RMB/year
2. First year students can apply for living in the International Student Dormitory of
BUCM for one year. The Accommodation Fee is 50-70 RMB/day.
3. Registration Fee: 800 RMB
